So, this is getting to be something of a habit...
Barenaked Ladies came back to the UK to tour their latest release,
Barenaked For the Holidays, and Shaun and Nic tracked them down,
mince pies and sack of presents in hand, and swapped the goodies
for answers.
This
time around, there was no posh hotel in sight, as we waited outside
the stage door at the Shepherds Bush Empire. (Can someone please
explain why stage doors and bins seem to be inextricably linked
together?) It was absolutely freezing and after waiting for about
10 minutes for Fin, BNL's tour manager and a very cool bloke, we
knocked at the door and asked if he was around. A couple of minutes
later and a familiar face appeared at the door - it was Fin, with
a cheery grin (don't expect any more rhymes, Shakespeare this ain't!).
We asked if it would be possible to wait inside as it was so cold
and Fin proceeded to prove his point that it wasn't at all cold,
in fact it was like a balmy summer's day, by standing outside with
us and chatting away for at least 10 minutes!
We asked if he was pleased that Jim had named his
new baby boy Finn, after him, and a huge smile lit up his face.
He's obviously extremely proud. However, he did go on to say he
was disappointed that so far none of the band has taken him up on
his original challenge - to name one of the children Tarzan! The
deal is, if one of the kids is called Tarzan, he will put all his
spare cash into an account and will pay Tarzan's college fees.
As we were standing and chatting, a dapper gent arrived,
and was greeted warmly by Fin. They chatted for a few seconds before
Fin introduced us to Pierre Troublay, BNL's manager. It was really
nice to meet him and have a quick chat as we made our way upstairs
to wait for BNL to get back from having their meal.
A
few minutes later and some kerfuffle in the hallway warned us that
the Ladies were on their way back to the dressing room. All of the
band grinned at us as they went into the room and a couple of seconds
later Ed came back out and said hi to us both, then informed us
that "I will be urinating, then I'll be back and we can have
a chat... or we could do both at the same time if you like!"
Strangely enough, both Shaun and I decided that the first option
was the best! Tyler also popped his head out, said hi and asked
if we'd brought cake again.
So, in we trooped to the dressing room (much less
tatty than the awful one backstage at the Manchester Apollo, where
we spoke to Ed and Kevin back in 2001), said hi to the rest of the
band and started the interview...
